About THE TRAITOR KING

"You MUST read this book. And, if you're like me, when you're finished you'll be desperately asking Todd Mitchell for the sequel."
—TeensReadToo.com (Starred Review Click here to read the complete review by Christian C.)

"Humor, menace, and mystery suffuse this fast-paced tale... New surprises and plot twists keep readers enthralled, because nothing —librarians, skeletal pursuers, or hard-drinking dads— is exactly as it seems. This well-written tale is a must for most fantasy readers."
            —School Library Journal

"Mitchell effectively blends the contemporary New England and the world of Irish myths in this heart-pounding tale."
            —Booklist

"Funny, sly, surprising, and wise . . . The Traitor King is all of this and more. Long live the Manananns!!!"
—Lauren Myracle (Bestselling author of TTYL and Eleven)

"A deliciously magical book —it has all the stuff I've always looked for in the ideal book..."
—Laura Resau (author of What the Moon Saw)

"...combines classic fairy-myth elements with quirky family dynamics and two likeable protagonists, to fine effect... a purely fun journey, infused with enough humor to keep the pages turning."
            —Publishers Weekly

"A delightful addition to the body of fantasy literature."      —Blatantly Honest Book Reviews (rated "ADVISABLE" for school library purchase)

"[The Traitor King] blew me away. The dialogue is rich and clean, and Darren's perspective as an almost 12-year-old is perfectly captured... unpredictable, imaginative, and astonishing. I was riveted..."
            —Jessica Benes, Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald

Join the campaign for a Broken World series!
Many readers of The Traitor King have been asking me lately about a second book in the series. I started a sequel, but I haven't finished it because I've been waiting to see if Scholastic is interested. Now The Reader's Cove, an independent bookstore (owned by a man who's daughter happens to be a huge fan of The Traitor King) has started a letter writing campaign to encourage Scholastic to release a paperback version of the book and publish a sequel. A few bloggers have also picked up the call for a Traitor King sequel, such as this one by the writer Jenn Bertman. If you're interested in joining the campaign, send me an email (it doesn't need to be long) at toddmitchellbooks@hotmail.com and I'll pass on your call for a paperback version of the book and a sequel to Scholastic. Thanks for the amazing support!

A Big Family Secret . . .

Darren and Jackie Mananann have always known there was something a little strange about their family . . . but it isn't until an unexpected presence propels them into a fantastical mystery that they discover how truly unusual and eerily powerful the Mananann family is. Things that once seemed ordinary —flowerpots, librarians, plates of cookies— suddenly have extraordinary meanings. And places that once seemed safe —trees in the forest, a fireplace in the den, a secret passage— are suddenly no longer safe.
One of Darren and Jackie's uncles has disappeared, and in order to save him they must unravel all the clues and signs that surround the Manananns's deepest, darkest secret —a secret that spans two very different worlds.
For the Manananns, mystery runs in the family. But where will this mystery lead?

New Books for Next Year!

My second novel, SYZYGY, is coming out with Candlewick Press in Fall, 2009!
SYZYGY tells the story of James, a high school sophomore who, upon getting into a boarding school where no one knows him, decides to completely re-invent himself as the person he's always dreamed of being. But when James's life becomes a lie, strange things start to happen. Think The Catcher in the Rye meets The Matrix. This book has taken me over four years to revise, but it was worth it. You'll see —you won't be disappointed.

*BREAKING NEWS* I'm going to be part of a graphic novel that's coming out around Christmas, 2009 with Vertigo Comics (part of D.C.)! Rebecca Guay, an incredible artist, is doing the art for a book of connected stories involving angels. But forget everything you thought you knew about angels and fairies. This book is not for the faint of heart. Holly Black, author of Spiderwick and Tithe and Jane Yolen are just two of the other amazing authors involved in this project.
